Shama Writer

Terms of Use

Shama Writer is free and open-source. Your work is yours. The software is provided as it is.

Last updated 18 August 2026.

The software

Shama Writer is provided free of charge by Shama Research under the MIT Licence. You may use it for any purpose, including academic and commercial work, with no account and no fee. The MIT Licence text governs your rights to the software itself.

Your work is yours

Anything you write, import, or create in Shama Writer belongs to you. Shama Research claims no ownership of your documents, receives no copy of them, and has no ability to access them, because they never leave your device except when you choose to export or share them. You are responsible for keeping your own backups; the app's Back up and export features exist for that purpose.

Provided "as is"

Shama Writer is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Shama Research is not liable for any loss of data, loss of work, or other damages arising from the use of, or inability to use, the software. In practice this means: keep your own backups of important work.

Reference material

Shama Writer can fetch reference material (scholarly metadata, Qur'an text and translations, tafsīr, and hadith) from third-party public services. This material is provided by those services, and its accuracy, completeness, and licensing are theirs, not ours. Hadith gradings are shown as reported by the source, including disagreements between graders; the app does not adjudicate authenticity. You are responsible for verifying any source before relying on it in your own work.

Acceptable use

Use Shama Writer lawfully. Do not use it to create or distribute unlawful content. Because the app runs entirely on your device and we receive no data, enforcement of this is a matter between you and the law, not something we monitor.

Third-party components

Shama Writer includes open-source components, including the Typst typesetting engine and a number of open-licensed fonts, used under their respective licences. Attributions are listed in the app's guide under Licences.

Changes

These terms may be updated; the current version is always the one on this page, with the date above. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
